Below we take an in-depth look into Universal Nutrition Fat Burners, to see whether this version aimed at athletes is any better than the rest on the market.
Universal Nutrition Fat Burners is a weight loss and fat-burning product that is primarily aimed at athletes and the bodybuilding community. The product claims to work without the use of caffeine and ephedrine, instead providing ingredients that effectively transport fat cell to cell that can burn them as a source of energy. Although Fat Burners were once available from several US retailers, it has since seemingly been discontinued as of 2017, although customers from some countries can still buy the remaining packs while stocks last.
The product is manufactured by Universal Nutrition, a bodybuilding and sports supplement manufacturers from the USA. Although they are a rather experienced company with some loyal backers in Internet forums, Universal Nutrition’s website and packaging seems to be rather dated when compared to the competition, giving them the appearance of a company on the way out. It is not currently known why the company has chosen to cease selling this particular product.
Judging from the ingredient list, the most likely side effect of using Fat Burners is stomach discomfort and diarrhoea (this side effect is associated with the use of flaxseed, lysine, betaine, lecithin, L-carnitine, inositol and uva ursi). Some customer reviews have complained of bloating and stomach cramps in particular.
More serious side effects have been linked to the overuse of uva ursi, especially for more than one month at a time. Regular use of uva ursi for more than one month at a time has been associated with liver damage, respiratory problems, convulsions, vomiting, oddly coloured urine, and even death.
Some customers have experienced an unpleasant bodily odour of fish, seizures, heartburn, and vomiting after taking L-carnitine, and other users have noticed dizziness, tiredness and headaches after taking inositol, so these may appear as side effects of taking Universal Nutrition Fat Burners.
Fat Burners has been discontinued in the USA, and so is now only available from a handful of international retailers in India, South Africa, Ireland, the Philippines and others. Prices vary depending on the country and location, although the cheapest packs appear to be available in the EU (a pack of 100 tablets can be purchased from an Irish website called HP Nutrition for just €13.99). Prices are fairly reasonable in India (714 rupees for 55 tablets) and the Philippines (1,499 Philippine Pesos for 100), and extremely unreasonable in South Africa (809 rand for just 55 tablets).
The fact that Universal Nutrition Fat Burners has been discontinued should not bode well, and it does seem that the product was a dud from the off. After looking at the ingredient balance, we remain convinced that this is not a great fat burning product, as many of the ingredients contained within this mix should not be too useful as fat burners. Customer reviews seem to indicate that the product raised the body’s natural temperature (to our surprise), and some indicate that they lost weight whilst using it. However, we firmly believe that this is more due to customers correctly dieting and exercising whilst using it, making this little better than a placebo.
One major negative point for the product is its current poor availability. Due to it being discontinued, it is now no longer available from most major retailers (although Irish, Indian and Filipino customers can still find some dwindling stocks for a bargain). Even if tempted to buy on the cheap, we would still argue that you could find much better value for your money by investing in a product that works, with fewer side effects and the chance of a full money-back guarantee to protect your purchase.
We do not recommend Universal Nutrition Fat Burners to our readers.
Universal Nutrition Fat Burners is a weight loss supplement that promises to help the body to release stored body fat in order to burn it for energy. Marketed more toward bodybuilders and athletic customers, these fat burners are specifically promoted as avoiding the paths favoured by most competitors (including the overuse of caffeine and ephedrine).
As the name suggests, Fat Burners are produced and sold by Universal Nutrition, an experienced American sports supplement manufacturers. Universal Nutrition seem to favour bodybuilding and sports supplements above all else, and their products are sold on customer favourites such as www.bodybuilding.com and others.
Take 2 tablets with 12 oz. of your favourite beverage. An additional 2 tablets may be taken prior to exercise. Use in conjunction with a sensible, low-fat diet. Do not exceed 4 tablets per day.
Universal Nutrition is quite short and sweet in their descriptions of ‘Fat Burners’. The product is described as a ‘lipotropic and metabolic complex’ which helps the body to release stored body fat. The fat is then transported into the body’s cells, where it is burned for energy. Although not directly stated, this product is clearly intended to be used as a weight-loss aid, and is marketed mainly at the highly active athletes and bodybuilders (probably as a way for customers to stay lean whilst working out).
The ingredients mix contained within Fat Burners are frankly a rather puzzling concoction. Many of the ingredients have never been associated with fat burning, and those that have suffered with a lack of real scientific evidence to back any and all claims. Judging from the ingredient balance, real effort has been made to try to find ingredients that help free up free fats, transport them through the blood stream and burn them for energy, although we would conclude that this attempt is slightly amateur and we feel that the product won’t work. It has notably been discontinued in the USA, which may be related to this.
Several customers claim that the product does work and seems to raise the body’s temperature, although just under half claim that it does nothing at all. Notably, almost all customers that claim this product works credit some of their success to proper diet and exercise; we would argue that this healthy eating and activity is the real source of most of the fat burning.
The ingredients contained within Universal Nutrition Fat Burners are listed below. Readers should note that the ingredient quantities listed below are true for 1 serving of fat burners (2 tablets).
Many of the ingredients contained within Fat Burners could cause side effects. The most troublesome ingredient in this regard is also likely the mix’s most effective: Uva Ursi. When taken regularly for more than a month at a time, Uva Ursi can cause liver damage, breathing problems, convulsions and life-threatening problems. Even when used properly, it has been known to cause nausea, vomiting and a greenish-brown discolouration of the urine.
L-carnitine is also a major ingredient in the mix, and can cause nausea, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhoea, seizures and a ‘fishy’ odour in the sweat, breath and urine. The use of inositol could also lead to nausea, dizziness, tiredness or headaches.
The only other major side effects from taking Fat Burners are general stomach pain and diarrhoea (which could be caused by a number of ingredients, including flaxseed, lysine, betaine, or lecithin).
Caution:
Not suitable for individuals under 18 years of age. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding consult a doctor before using this product. If you are taking any medication, or have any type of medical issue, consult with a doctor before using this product.
Although Universal Nutrition Fat Burners have been discontinued on many online stores, a few customer reviews are still accessible to check out. A slight majority of customers claim that the product works (particularly by raising body temperature), and several others (around 40%) claim that the product doesn’t work at all.
This product I feel works for me. We are all different but this helped me get over my plateau of weight loss. I don’t like stimulant based fat burners with lots of caffeine so this was great. Awesome product, great brand. Highly recommended.
Not a miracle fat burner, but will help you sweat more and if used in connection with a good diet and regular exercise then you’re good to go. I didn’t feel that overheated feeling that much unless I took 3–4 at one time. Worked well and doesn’t overheat your body throughout the day which is always annoying. For the price you could stretch these out to just use as a pre-workout or even follow the directions it still is a great value.
This stuff is pretty much pointless. I took a full bottle combined with heavy workouts and a strict diet and saw no results. The price is the draw to it but it won’t do you any good. They say ETS but these pills not smell, taste, and look like dog food…
This stuff is a digestive NIGHTMARE. Made me incredibly constipated, bloated, and had the wonderful effect of making flatulence smell like dying animals. The pills were huge, smelled AWFUL, tasted awful, and looked nasty. Do NOT buy this supp. Ever!
Universal Nutrition makes no mention of a money back guarantee on their official website, although they do mention that they will not organise refunds on products that were purchased elsewhere. This could be an issue for customers as this product is not available to buy from the official Universal Nutrition website! As always in this instance, check the individual retailer where you make your purchase, and always try to stick to outlets that give you the right to return opened bottles of products for a full refund (regardless of your reason).
Universal Nutrition seems to have discontinued their Fat Burners product across the board. It is no longer available from the official website, Amazon and most other American online retailers (including iHerb, Lucky Vitamin and more). Customers in some other countries can still buy packs of Fat Burners as of April 2017, however, including from Healthkart (South Africa), HP Nutrition (Ireland), BodyMart, Health Genie & BodyFitKart (India), Lazada (Philippines), and probably many more. Check with your local retailer, although remember that stocks are likely limited.
The current cost of Fat Burners varies according to availability and country of purchase, although we will give a sample guide below for those who may be interested. Indian customers can buy a pack of 55 tablets for 714 rupees, and South African customers can find the same pack for 809 rand. The larger box of 100 tablets is available for 1,499 Philippine Pesos from Lazada, and for €13.99 from the Irish retailer, HP Nutrition.
