What You Need To Know About Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass

Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass is a high calorie bulking powder that is designed to help consumers gain weight fast. Each serving contains 50 grams of protein, 250 grams of carbohydrates, and a total 1250 calories. The product comes in a range of different flavours, including banana, chocolate, chocolate peanut butter, strawberry, and vanilla.

The product comes in two sizes – a 6 lb tub and a 12 lb tub. The large tub contains just 16 servings, and the small tub contains 8 servings. The main ingredient is Maltodextrin, a highly processed starch that can cause blood sugar levels to raise very quickly.

What Are The Side Effects Of Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass?

Protein shakes in general typically do not cause many side effects, but Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass is a bulking aid, rather than just a regular protein shake. The very high quantities of protein found in this particular shake means that the chances of side effects occurring are much higher. Numerous reviewers of the product mention side effects that appear to be caused by the high protein content.

Whey protein can cause some side effects, including increased bowel movements, diarrhoea, nausea, thirst, stomach cramps, fatigue, and bloating.

Maltodextrin has a very high GI rating and can raise your blood sugar levels very quickly. This means that this supplement is unlikely to be suitable for diabetics, as the Maltodextrin content is so high. Consult your doctor if you are unsure about the suitability of this supplement for you.

Creatine can cause some side effects including stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea, and muscle cramping. Creatine causes muscles to draw water from the rest of your body.

How Much Does Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass Cost?

Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass can be purchased from the official Optimum Nutrition website. There are two sizes available, a 6lb tub and a 12 lb tub; these are huge compared to many protein products that other companies put out. A 6 lb tub costs $27.99 (8 servings), whilst a 12 lb tub costs $45.99 (16 servings). Delivery charges may also apply.

Optimum Nutrition products are stocked by numerous third party online retailers, as the company has a good reputation, and this supplement is no different. It definitely pays to shop around, as prices vary quite a lot.

On Amazon’s UK website a 12 lb bag costs £40.75 plus delivery charges. Amazon Prime customers can get free Prime (next day) delivery. Bodybuilding.com charges $27.48 for the 6lb tub, and $47.98 for the 12 lb tub. Delivery charges may also apply.

Each 6 lb tub contains a mere 8 servings, whilst each 12 lb tub contains 16 servings. However, these servings are huge, with 1250+ calories per serving.

Our Verdict On Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass

Overall, we have a mixed opinion of Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass; when used right, it offers real benefits and results, but it is far from a perfect product.

The low price per weight of Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass may seem very appealing to customers, but it should not be used to replace a regular protein shake in most circumstances. The main ingredient is maltodextrin, and ultimately the purpose of the supplement is to make consuming an incredibly large number of calories easier, quicker, and more convenient. The product is suitable for use during a bulking phase, but is far from ideal for use during a cutting phase. Maltodextrin can cause significant blood sugar spikes and this supplement is not suitable for diabetics.

There are numerous reports of side effects occurring whilst taking this supplement. Consuming too much protein can upset the stomach, and some people report getting better results by slowly increasing their daily protein intake.

The number of flavour options means that there is plenty of choice for customers, but there are a number of negative comments about the flavour profiles.

The product is covered by a very generous money-back guarantee; there is a limit to the guarantee, but as it is a fair use policy and consumers can return opened and used products (as long as 75% of the product or more remains), we are more than happy with this policy.

Overall, we do not recommend Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass to our readers in general. However, if you have trouble gaining weight and want to bulk up fast, this could be a good option.

  • Maltodextrin: Maltodextrin is the main source of carbohydrates and calories in this supplement. Maltodextrin is a highly processed starch that typically is made from corn, rice, potato starch or wheat. Although it is usually used as a thickener, filler, or preservative in foods, here it is the main ingredient. It will help to replenish the body’s glycogen and glucose levels. Source
  • Whey Protein Concentrate: This is the cheapest and most common form of whey protein and is a by-product of milk production. Whey seems to help recovery after sports and endurance training so is often used by athletes. Whey protein contains BCCA amino acids and may causes feelings of satiety. It appears to decrease the release of hormones such as ghrelin, which signal hunger. Whey Protein Concentrate is digested slightly slower than Whey Protein Isolate, and has a higher fat and carb content than Isolate alternatives. Source
  • Calcium Caseinate: A source of protein, calcium caseinate breaks down slower than whey proteins, meaning that it can provide a sustained release of amino acids over time. Source
  • Medium Chain Triglycerides: MCTs are found naturally in coconut oil and palm kernel oil (amongst others). Research suggests that these useful fats increase serum ketone levels to a greater extent than all other fatty acids. They have also been found to cause a small boost in metabolism, and may decrease fat mass to a greater extent than other long chain fatty acids. Source
  • Creatine Monohydrate: This molecule helps to rapidly produce ATP in the muscles, helping to boost strength and power in the gym. Source
  • Choline Bitartrate: Choline supplementation appears to improve attention, and could improve memory, although the dose was much higher than appears to be used here, and the relevant study focused upon the elderly. Choline is required to make increased levels of acetylcholine in the brain. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter which is linked with improved learning, memory retention and recall. Source
  • L-Glutamine: This is an essential amino acid, which is a building block of protein. It is the most abundant free amino acid in the body, and is produced in the muscles and distributed where it is needed via the circulatory system. Supplementation can only help to build muscle in limited circumstances, as (once again) most people enjoy sufficient stocks of glutamine from their regular diet or from protein powders. Source
  • Glutamine Peptides [Wheat]
  • Whey Powder: Another source of protein.
  • Inositol: Appears to treat anxiety when used in high doses. It may also improve insulin resistance and other metabolic markers of metabolic syndrome, including cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Source
  • Sweetener (Sucralose): A low calorie sweetener.

Allergen Warning: Contains: Gluten, Egg, Milk and Soy (Lecithin). May Contain: Peanuts, Nuts.

Does Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass Have Any Side Effects?

Protein shakes in general typically do not cause many side effects, but Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass is a bulking aid, rather than just a regular protein shake. The very high quantities of protein found in this particular shake means that the chances of side effects occurring are much higher. Numerous reviewers of the product mention side effects that appear to be caused by the high protein content.

Whey protein can cause some side effects, including:

  • Increased bowel movements
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Thirst
  • Stomach cramps
  • Fatigue
  • Bloating

Maltodextrin has a very high GI rating and can raise your blood sugar levels very quickly. This means that this supplement is unlikely to be suitable for diabetics, as the Maltodextrin content is so high. Consult your doctor if you are unsure about the suitability of this supplement for you. Signs that maltodextrin has caused your blood sugar to spike include: sudden headache, increased thirst, trouble concentrating, blurred vision, and fatigue. If you experience any of these symptoms, check your blood sugar levels immediately. If they’re too high, contact your doctor.

Glutamine can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, gas, swelling in your hands or feet, muscle or joint pain, back pain; headache, dizziness, tired feeling; mild skin rash or itching, dry mouth, runny nose, and increased sweating.

Glutamine supplementation could make Cirrhosis worse. If you are sensitive to MSG, you might also be sensitive to glutamine, because the body converts glutamine to glutamate.

Creatine can cause some side effects including stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea, and muscle cramping. Creatine causes muscles to draw water from the rest of your body.

Caution:

Not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Not suitable for anyone under the age of 18. If you are taking any medications or are unsure about the suitability of this supplement for you, consult your doctor before purchase. Not suitable for vegans. Not suitable for the lactose intolerant. Not suitable for anyone who has been diagnosed with Mania, as Glutamine supplementation may make this worse. May not be suitable for diabetics due to the very high amounts of carbohydrates per serving- if you are diabetic, consult your doctor to see if it is suitable for you.

Are There Any Customer Reviews For Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass?

There are lots of customer reviews for this product on Amazon, one of the many websites where the product is sold.

This serious mass weight gainer works surprisingly well. I purchased two 2.73kg tubs not expecting much difference in my weight as I have always struggled to put weight on no matter how much I ate and tried but to my amazement I put on 4.3kg in one month of regular use of this serious mass weight gainer shake.

The way I used this weight gainer was twice a day. Once in the morning and one at night. I mix 1 big scoop with full fat milk and usually drink along with my breakfast and evening meal and some fruit and veg.

I also gradually built up my dosage starting at a quarter scoop servings twice a day building up to one full scoop twice a day. The reason for this was to allow my stomach to get used to the increase dosage of proteins and nutrients.

I have tried the vanilla, banana, strawberry and chocolate and they all they taste really nice and sweet. This weight gainer powder mixes well and digests well and makes me feel good.

This serious mass weight gainer works well and at a cost of around £2.50 a day you really cant go wrong and if you want to gain weight this would be an excellent option and highly recommended.

Tasted lovely but horrendous stomach cramps and nauseousness for hours within half hour of drinking, common thing after reading reviews elsewhere

I don’t know if it was this or not but since I’ve started using this (half dose) I’ve started having stomach ache and bad diarrhoea. I’ve had a bad time so I will never try it again. The taste is awful (compared with the ON 100% whey) and the doses are huge.

i drank this product for a year and managed to put on weight. then, the product changed and was so disgusting i couldn’t stand the smell and taste and was unable to drink it. the original product contained 24 vitamins, the new ‘not’ improved product contained 25 vitamins. the new version has an incredibly sweet taste and the flavour is dire.

A good product overall, started to see results after a week, mixed well with water and milk and didn’t taste too bad ( chocolate) only problem I had was the recommended 334g powder needed to get the 50g protein per serving 1-2 servings per day, the bag lasted 14 days as you need “whey” ha! more than 2 scoops. Also the bag is resealable but it don’t open too wide. Powder everywhere!
