The MusclePharm Corporation was founded by ex-NFL player Brad Pyatt in 2008 who stood down from the company in 2016 following accounting violations and an investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. MusclePharm is now headed by fitness guru Bill Philips who looks to be expanded the business. All MusclePharm products are aimed at the sport and body building niche, and the company is well known with celebrity ambassadors including Arnold Schwarzenegger and NFL players.
MusclePharm Combat Crunch Protein Bar may suit you if you are trying to up your protein intake for bodybuilding, or are looking for a satisfying post workout snack. The bars are available in 9 flavours, all sweet or chocolate based and they do contain flavours and sweeteners. The bars are packaged in boxes of 12 and are not overly expensive, especially as you really should only use occasionally. Use too often and it is likely you will put on weight and not lose it. There are a couple of issues regarding the formula and the texture of the protein bars. The advertising claims that the Combat bars are back to the original formula and are as soft as eating a soft batch cookie, but many customers have said that the texture is similar to hard taffy (toffee) with some people finding it inedible, especially as it is likely to damage teeth.
Potential side effects include damage to teeth, gas, and increased bowel movements.
Buy from the official MusclePharm website and a box of 12 bars costs $19.99. The price is the same for all 9 flavours. Shipping is calculated at the point of sale.
If you live outside the USA you can find a list of international distributors via the website.
You can also buy via Amazon USA and Amazon UK where prices vary depending on where you buy and the flavour.
Buy from Amazon USA and the most expensive flavour is White Chocolate Raspberry at $26.01 for 12 bars. However, many other flavours including Cinnamon Twist, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, and Cookies and Cream are on sale for the cheaper price of $16.79.
Buy from Amazon UK and a pack of 12 bars costs around £23.00 depending on flavour.
MusclePharm Combat Crunch Protein Bar does deliver 20g of protein and 12g of fibre per serving, so it is a convenient way of increasing your protein and fibre intake. However, there is nothing very healthy about this snack bar as it does contain fat, sugars, and flavourings. In addition, we can see it making you put on weight and fat especially if you eat too many or use without working out or making dietary changes to compensate. Each bar contains 210 calories so eaten on top of your usual diet, it will have a significant effect.
There are certainly healthier ways of increasing fibre and protein than by buying this protein bar, such as keeping to a balanced diet and consuming plenty of protein, and we are concerned that some people may consider this protein bar a health snack when it so obviously is not.
Overall, we do not recommend MusclePharm Combat Crunch Protein Bar to the Watchdog readers.
MusclePharm Combat Crunch Protein Bar is a low carb, low sugar protein bar which contains protein and fiber, so is ideal for post work recovery or as a convenient protein snack between meals. All bars are made from non GMO sources and are gluten free.
Despite the healthy sounding profile, the bar comes in a choice of flavours that many people will find appealingly unhealthy including Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup, Birthday Cake, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and more. There is a choice of nine flavours in total and if you like candy bars and chocolate, and most people do, you will probably love them!
According to the advertising, the bars resemble the texture of a soft batch cookie rather than hard taffy (toffee) but not all customers agree with this description, and you do have to bear in mind that it is called Combat Crunch, a name that suggests crunchiness. So it may be harder to eat than described, and all we can say is be careful with any fillings or bridgework you may have!
The Combat Crunch Protein Bars contains 12g of fibre and 20g of protein per bar, and adds up to 210 calories.
We covered MusclePharm Combat XL Bar in a previous review. This is a “bigger” bar when it comes to protein and calorie intake, at a whopping 390 calories and with 30g of protein. So as the name suggests, it is the XL version of the Combat Crunch range.
According to the advertising,
Combat Crunch™ baked protein bars are made using a proprietary baking process for superior taste and a softer texture.
The bars are high protein, with low active carbs and tons of fiber. Unlike hard-paste, “taffy-like” sports bars; Combat Crunch™ is like eating a soft-batch cookie.
According to the product information, Combat Crunch Protein Bar has won Protein Bar of the Year, three times. There are no further details about this award but that said, this protein bar does feature highly on websites such as bodybuilding com. Of course, it is important to remember that many websites saying how great this product is are also selling it!
Combat Crunch Protein Bars are also certified free from any stimulants or banned substances. This is good but we have yet to see a snack bar or protein bar which does actually contain banned substances, so this claim is nothing special.
According to the product information, each bar is gluten free, non GMO, and high in protein and fibre. Buyers and the product information state that the production of the bars has now gone back to the “Original Formula”
If you are looking for a protein filled snack as part of your overall workout formula, you may be pleased with Combat Crunch Protein Bar. If used as part of your muscle building regime which requires you to consume protein whenever possible, it could be effective. However, there is nothing contained in this bar which you could not get from a healthy balanced diet. It really comes down to taste and convenience and your own workout regime.
Some customers have questioned the description as like eating a soft batch cookie. Many people say it is extremely hard and brittle like taffy (toffee) and some have found it inedible. If you have any loose teeth or fillings, this could be an issue for some users.
All the various flavours have a slightly different ingredients profile when it comes to flavourings. We decided to look at Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup.
The nutritional breakdown is as follows:
MusclePharm Combat Crunch Protein Bar is unlikely to cause side effects. However, if you eat too many of these or add them to your diet and do not exercise, the most noticeable effect will be weight gain.
Some customers have mentioned:
Not suitable for individuals under 18. Avoid if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
There are nearly 2000 customer reviews for MusclePharm Combat Crunch Protein Bar on Amazon alone. Some customers are happy with the protein bar, with many people mentioning their favourite flavour.
If I could give 6 stars I would. These taste so good I ordered another box as I was eating the first bar. Cinnamon Swirl is the freaking bomb
I bought the chocolate and peanut butter bars and this may be pre-mature, but it is amazing! I saw reviews that said they changed their formula and it tasted horrible but I took the chance anyways. I am glad I did so far because they taste spectacular. Finally something that breaks the monotony of my normal diet with something that tastes like a dessert but still has low sugar unlike most protein bars. Very pleased.
Other positive comments include,
Tastes great. Just chewy enough to take a while to eat.
Good meal replacement.
These are the best protein bars I’ve ever tasted!
Not everyone is as positive. Many customers have complained about the texture,
The bars were exactly the opposite of what was advertised. They were NOT soft and chewy. It was akin to biting into shoe leather.
I am unable to eat this bar with fear of cracking my teeth. It is very hard and I can’t even cut it with a streak knife. I checked the expiration date and it says they are good until July 2018. I am very disappointed with this purchase!
These rank up there as some of the worst tasting Protein bars I have ever eaten. There is a slight crunch, but there is no peanut butter chocolate flavor about these bars. They just leave a bad taste. Will NEVER buy these again.
MusclePharm does not offer a money-back guarantee beyond a standard 30 days return policy (money-back on unopened goods).
You can buy the Combat Crunch range direct from the MusclePharm website. You can also find the bars on sale via Amazon (UK and USA). MusclePharm Combat Crunch Protein Bars are also on sale via other online retailers and sports shops.
