ENGN Shred

A bodybuilder’s life is dominated by bulking or cutting cycles, both of which need to be supported by their own considerate approach to eating and exercise. To give athletes that extra leg up, many supplement manufacturers now offer performance boosters that also provide useful additional effects, such as weight loss effects or bulking agents.

Below we take an in-depth look at ENGN Shred, to see whether this pre-workout/weight loss mix has the ingredients and reputation to please customers.

What You Need To Know About ENGN Shred

ENGN Shred is a pre-workout supplement that also offers a handful of weight loss ingredients and cognition enhancers. It has so far proved very popular on outlets like Amazon and www.bodybuilding.com, and seems to attract generally positive reviews. Despite the hype, it still has the potential to cause serious side effects, with many former customers tending to recommend avoiding caffeine whilst using it.

What Are The Side Effects Of ENGN Shred?

Side effects should be expected whilst using many pre-workouts, and ENGN Shred is no exception. Perhaps the biggest culprit here is Yohimbe, which is known to cause a range of unfortunate side effects, including stomach problems, jitters, trembling, sleep problems, anxiety, high blood pressure, a raised heart rate, dizziness, drooling, sinus pan, headaches, frequent urination, bloating, rashes, and vomiting.

The high doses of caffeine found in this product can also cause side effects, particularly when drinking coffee or other sources of caffeine during the day. Expect headaches, jitters, sleeplessness, raised heart rates, dehydration, and increased blood pressure when overdosing on caffeine.

This list is unfortunately not exhaustive, and you can read more about the potential adverse effects of using Trans4orm in the Side Effects tab.

How Much Does ENGN Shred Cost?

ENGN Shred is not a particularly expensive product. A standard 30-serving tub of powder costs just $27.54 on Amazon and $28.99 on the official Evlution Nutrition website. It is actually slightly more expensive on the website where most people seem to buy it (www.bodybuilding.com), costing $34.99 for the same tub.

Our Verdict On ENGN Shred

ENGN Shred is a product that has attracted a decent amount of praise from former customers. Its popularity is a great indicator of its quality, and shows us that the formula is generally better-balanced than most, offering effectiveness with fewer side effects and with a great taste.

We still think this industry has a problem with allowing side effects to happen unnecessarily, a factor which stop us recommending products like ENGN Shred outright. The formula needlessly includes a semi-effective ingredient called Yohimbe, which has a strong side effect profile that can make people feel quite ill over time. Combining this with the caffeine does create adverse effects for the majority of people seemingly, with many former customers mentioning side effects in otherwise positive comments. The lack of published ingredient quantities makes it hard for us to tell how bad the problem really is.

It’s worth mentioning that we generally like Evlution Nutrition and their good reputation, but their lack of money back guarantee is a constant negative on the company. Customers should be encouraged to buy from a 3rd party retailer who perhaps has a fairer policy for dealing with returns.

All in all, ENGN Shred is a product that ranks among the best available, and we wouldn’t begrudge readers for perhaps giving it a try if the price suits. Unfortunately, we cannot really recommend a product that carries such a significant (and unnecessary) side effect profile.

We do not recommend ENGN Shred to our readers.

What Does ENGN Shred Claim To Do?

ENGN Shred is advertised as a straightforward pre-workout that delivers “intense workouts while also supporting your fat loss goals”. Along with the expected performance boosting effects, ENGN Shred also claims to offer a thermogenic fat-burning action and some cognitive enhancers that help to boost focus.

Does ENGN Shred Work?

ENGN Shred contains a few ingredients that could help to boost performance at the gym (including caffeine, beta alanine, and l-carnitine) and also contains a few effective nootropics (Huperzine A and Alpha-GPC) and weight loss aids (green tea and capsaicin). Although there are a decent number of useless ingredients thrown in for good measure, we would generally expect this product to work broadly as advertised.

It’s worth mentioning that the long list of customer reviews currently available online back this conclusion up significantly, with the vast majority praising the formula for its effectiveness.

What Are The Ingredients of ENGN Shred?

The ingredients found in ENGN Shred are detailed below. Readers should note that the ingredient quantities listed below are correct for 1 scoop (7.7g) of ENGN Shred. However, not all ingredient quantities are listed, which can make it hard for us to estimate how effective the overall mix is.

  • Niacin (as niacinamide) 35mg (175% RDA): This vitamin is normally only useful in cases of deficiency, although very high doses (like that which is used in this product) have been associated with lowering cholesterol. Source
  • Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxine HCl) 2mg (100% RDA): Vitamin B6 has several important functions in the body, including ‘allowing the body to use and store energy from protein and carbohydrates in food’. Whilst taking excess amounts of vitamin B6 will not infinitely improve this ability, a deficiency could make it more difficult to lose weight. Vitamin B6 is naturally present in a wide variety of foods, including meat, cereals, bread, and vegetables. Source
  • Folic Acid 800mcg (200% RDA): Otherwise known as Vitamin B9, folic acid is a vital component in the process of making DNA and speeding cell growth. Source
  • Vitamin B12 (as cyanocobalamin) 25mcg (417% RDA): Vitamin B12 is naturally present in many foods, primarily meat, fish and dairy products. It has several roles, including aiding in releasing energy from consumed food, and keeping the nervous system healthy. It may be that a deficiency hinders weight loss, but taking excessive amounts could be harmful (although this product contains a reasonable dosage). Source
  • CarnoSyn® Beta-Alanine 1,600mg: Beta alanine has been repeatedly proven to raise the levels of muscle carnosine in the human body, which has the effect of increasing the amount of work athletes can perform in high-intensity workouts. Its use is accompanied by a distinctive “tingling” sensation in the muscles. Source

  • Conjugated Linoleic Acid Powder (std. min. 60% CLA) 500mg: Although some early trials indicated that CLA could burn a small amount of fat when supplemented, more recent evidence may be suggesting that it often fails to do that. Although it may cause a tiny bit of weight loss and may lower blood pressure, it is generally inconsistent and weak when compared to other fat burners. Source
  • L-Carnitine L-Tartrate 500mg: One study found that supplementation of L-carnitine, L-tartrate reduced muscle tissue damage from exercise and sped up recovery time. Compared to other forms of l-carnitine, it is more commonly used to boost muscular performance than contribute to weight loss. Source
  • Coleus extract (as Coleus forskohli) (root) 100mg: This plant belongs to the mint family, and is thought to boost the metabolism. However, the clinical trials performed using this ingredient indicate that this ingredient does not deliver weight loss results. Source
  • Capsimax® Cayenne (Capsicum annuum) fruit extract 25mg: Capsaicin, found in Cayenne pepper, is thought by some to play a role in weight loss. Some studies suggest it could suppress the appetite mildly, whilst others suggest that the heat causes a thermogenic reaction in the body, burning more calories for a period of time. However, there are also studies that show cayenne has little or no effect upon weight loss attempts. Source
  • Yohimbe extract (as Pausinystalia yohimbe) (bark) 40mg: Some studies have noticed increased blood concentrations of free fatty acids in participants who use yohimbe extract, suggesting increased rates of lipolysis. However, the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database has stated that there is insufficient evidence to claim it aids in weight loss. Source

ENGN Mind-to-Muscle Matrix 2,016mg

  • Betaine Anhydrous: Betaine can help relieve conditions associated with hardening in the arteries. Although it is thought by some to improve athletic performance, scientific trials have failed to show consistent results with trained/untrained men. Source
  • Choline Bitartrate: Athletes sometimes supplement Choline to delay fatigue and improve endurance. It is also said to improve mental focus. However, the available clinical evidence suggests that Choline Bitartrate does not cause either effect to take place. Source
  • L-Tyrosine: An amino acid that is a building block of protein, this ingredient is found naturally in many foods including meat and dairy products. Some people use it as an appetite suppressant, but there is little evidence that it is effective for this use. Large doses of tyrosine may be useful for increasing alertness, especially in people who are sleep deprived. Source
  • Agmatine Sulfate (as AGmass™): Agmatine Sulfate is thought by some to act as a useful form of pain relief, although most sports supplement manufacturers promote it as a way to improve performance and aid exercise recovery. Source
  • Alpha-Glycerylphosphorylcholine: In Europe, alpha-GPC is a prescription medication for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, but in the USA, it is a prescription free dietary supplement. It appears to have some cognitive-boosting properties, helps to prevent cognitive decline, and may also enhance power output in athletes. Source
  • Hyperzia serrata extract (std. min. 1% Huperzine A) (club moss): Huperzine-A is found in Huperzia serrata. Huperzine-A is thought to be a cognitive enhancer. Because of the relatively long half-life of this compound, its use should be cycled, with breaks in usage every few weeks. Source

  • Natural Caffeine (from Coffee Bean): Numerous studies have shown that caffeine boosts energy levels and alertness, as well as mildly boosting the metabolism, causing a small increase in the number of calories used by the body. The effects shown in studies are small, and some studies are inconclusive. Source
  • Green Tea Extract (standardized for EGCG) (leaf): Green tea is high in a group of antioxidants called catechins. Studies have suggested that catechins increase thermogenesis in the body, whilst caffeine increases energy expenditure by boosting the metabolism slightly for few hours. Source

Does ENGN Shred Have Any Side Effects?

As with many pre-workout supplements, ENGN Shred comes with a significant potential for side effects, with a fair few customers complaining of the usual jitters and racing heartbeat associated with performance boosters.

High doses of caffeine can cause headaches, jitteriness, insomnia, an increased heartrate, heart palpitations, increased urination, dehydration, and increased blood pressure. Customers that are extra sensitive to caffeine should consider avoiding it altogether, or at least avoid other sources of caffeine whilst using it.

Yohimbe can also cause a wide range of side effects, including stomach upset, excitation, tremor, sleep problems, anxiety or agitation, high blood pressure, a racing heartbeat, dizziness, stomach problems, drooling, sinus pain, irritability, headache, frequent urination, bloating, rash, nausea, and vomiting. High doses can cause more severe effects.

One other potential issue with this product is its use of high doses of certain vitamins, many of which greatly exceed the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA). Niacin can occasionally induce temporary effects in high doses, which may include flushing, stomach upset, and diarrhoea. Folic acid is also thought to be somewhat unsafe at the highest doses, potentially increasing the risk of heart attack or certain types of cancers. If this product is taken daily over the long-term, the high folic acid content could begin to cause stomach/intestinal issues, rashes, sleep disorders, cognitive/psychological issues, or even seizures.

Huperzine A is known for its side effects, especially when taken continuously for 3 months or more. It has been known to cause digestive issues, stomach issues, blurred vision, loss of appetite, sweating, cramping, high blood pressure, and other issues. Betaine may occasionally cause stomach complaints and diarrhoea.

Other ingredients may also cause occasional side effects (although these are a lot rarer).

Tyrosine is generally thought to be safe, but may cause nausea, headaches, fatigue, heartburn, and joint pain for some customers. L-carnitine and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) can sometimes cause stomach upset, diarrhoea, vomiting, fatigue, heartburn, and seizures. Both ingredients also have the unusual effect of causing the urine, breath, and sweat to have a “fishy” odour. Capsicum extract doesn’t often cause issues, but can occasionally cause stomach irritation, stomach-ache, sweating, flushing, and a runny nose.

Not for use by those with pre-existing medical conditions; those taking any medications; those under the age of 18; those who are caffeine, niacin or Beta-Alanine sensitive or women who are contemplating pregnancy, pregnant or nursing. Consult your physician prior to using this product if you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications or supplements. Do not use this product if you are at risk or are being treated for any medical condition including, but not limited to: high or low blood pressure; cardiac arrhythmia; stroke; heart, liver, kidney, or thyroid diseases; seizure disorder; psychiatric disease; diabetes; difficulty urinating due to prostate enlargement or if you are taking a MAO inhibitor. Discontinue use and consult your healthcare professional if you experience any adverse reaction to this product. Keep out of reach of children. Do not exceed recommended serving size or suggested use for any reason. Discontinue use 2 weeks prior to surgery.

Are There Any Customer Reviews For ENGN Shred?

Evlution Nutrition products are nothing if not popular, and ENGN Shred is no exception. We were able to find hundreds and hundreds of reviews online, and the vast majority of these are highly positive. The product reportedly works very effectively as a pre-workout, although many customers highlight the formula’s strong potential for side effects. A common piece of advice is to avoid caffeine whilst taking this product!

This is a great pre workout, I’ve been taking it for a few weeks. I do crossfit, and before this I wasn’t good at it since I am in bad shape, but after this PW I can finish my WODs in really good time, I can feel more energy and a lot of focus during the workout, it is like there’s nothing else and you can focus on your reps. I suffer migraines, so I was worried it could cause me headaches, but it does not. No jitters, no crash, no side effects so far. By the way, you should read carefully to the warning in the label, do not take it at night, I have a couple of times at 9pm and I couldn’t sleep until 2am. Bottom line: It’s an amazing product for a nice price!

I have tried a million different preworkouts over the last ten years. This ranks up there as one of my favorites. Taste is phenomenal, energy is great and the thermogenic qualities are a great touch to aid in fat burning. Will buy again

Caffeine in coffee doesn’t help me get through the day or workouts at all but the caffeine mix in this preworkout definitely helps me get those extra workouts in and I can feel it work within 10-15 minutes! Careful though, one day I had two servings in the morning along with some coffee and my heart was racing so fast the entire day.

I have been taking the same pre-workout for many years and I wanted to try something new. This stuff kicked in within 15 minutes and I had an amazing workout, but within an hour my hands were trembling and I was violently ill for over 18 hours. The nausea lingered all day long and nothing helped ease the queasiness. I had the same problem with Hydroxycut and I finally figured out it’s because of Yohimbe (fat burner). So, if you’ve experienced similar issues with products, check the ingredient list for Yohimbe.

Does ENGN Shred Offer a Money-Back Guarantee?

Evlution Nutrition do not have any kind of money back guarantee. Refunds are only available for customers who receive a damaged package, and all returns must be arranged after first contacting the company directly. Readers should still bear in mind that Evlution Nutrition products tend to be sold via 3rd party retailers, many of whom have very fair and useful money back guarantee policies. We always advise shopping around to find the best deal.

Where Can I Buy ENGN Shred?

ENGN Shred is available to buy from a number of online retailers, including Amazon, www.bodybuilding.com, the official Evlution Nutrition website, iHerb, and more. A 5.6oz tub containing 30 servings is also not overwhelmingly expensive.

The cheapest price we found was on Amazon, where the standard 30-serving tub was $27.54. On the official Evlution Nutrition website, it costs $28.99, on www.bodybuilding.com it costs $34.99, and on iHerb it costs $37.35.
